カンボジア、アンコールワット観光の拠点となるシェムリアップにある五つ星ホテル。

ホテルを探していると空港から近いとか遺跡から近いとか書いてますが、シェムリアップって実際かなり小さい街なので、どこでもそんなには変わりません。どうせ車で遺跡まで行くんだったら５分と変わらない。空港からダウンタウンまで１５分ぐらいだし。車の移動を前提とした場合にはあまり気にする必要はなし。

この本は名作。Cocoa開発者は必読。

デザインパターンとは、先人たちの知恵を集めたものに対して使うのが普通だが、これはちょっと毛色が違う。Cocoaというライブラリがどういうデザインパターンに基づいて構築されているか、ということを説明した本である。ライブラリの根底に流れる考え方をデザインパターンという形で説明した本なのである。

泣きました。久々に作品を読んで泣きました。しかも号泣。なんとも不覚なんですが、思い出してもまだ危ないぐらい。男性の犬好きはこの本、外で読んではいけないかと。気をつけて。

読んだ後、思わずうちの犬、まんたろうのとこに走ってって、抱きついたら逃げられました。薄情なやつ。

Input source shortcut miss selection.

Snow leopald introduces new input source choices HUD, which will be activated by typing the shortcut and holding the modifier key (right?) The UI is good idea, but there’s one thing I want to be fixed. The menu icon is not change with typing until I release modifier key. That makes me confused where am I miss the typing? So I tried the next typing and that causes input source change again, and at that time the HUD UI comes up and I realized the fact. All these things happen in half seconds. I think typing should be change the menu icon too, to give a visual feedback.

I attach the movie to explain this. Instead of using standard “Command+Space”, I changed the shortcut to “Command+1” for demonstration.

Engineering has determined that this issue behaves as intended based on the following information:

Basically this is a behaves correctly the design of the switcher is to work between command-space (select previous input source) and command-option-space (select next input source). The switcher offers the user a chance to just look at the available input sources and move through them. The selection is not committed until the modifier key is released. This parallels how menus, buttons, etc. etc. work. You can always escape out of the switcher by clicking the mouse outside of the hud window or if you don’t want to remove your hands from the keyboard you can move the select back to the current selection and release.

I don’t agree with that decision with following reasons.

First of all, if you add something new, just add without changing the way the users used to do. You change the way we, such as Japanese, use the short cut to switch input sources. Prior to Snow Leopard, cmd+space was handled when key down. The indicator in menu bar was changed immediately after key down.

I was surprised to notice how I got used to this small indicator, but actually we really really need some immediate reaction when we invoke switch command.

Second, people don’t think if the short cut could canceled before invoked. In another word, I shortcut should be invoked immediately. Without doubt, command+space is shortcut for switching input sources.

By the way, can you imagine how often we type this shortcut? Maybe thousands of time we type in a day. We have to switch from Japanese to English to type email address. We have to switch just to type “MacOS X” in Japanese sentence. Even if writing this English, we have to look in the Dictionary app and type Japanese to find English vocabulary.

We type switch shortcut so often that we thought there’re no difference between typing shortcut and typing letters. Do you need the chance of cancel when typing letter ‘a’? Please imagine typing letters without displaying letter until key up. How irritated if you cannot see the typed letters?

iPhone does so but that is an exception. They have a reason to do so. Also there are visual representation with software keyboard.

Third, holding modifier key is the standard user experience. But I think holding entire keys to invoke shortcut (both command and space) is not familiar even with experienced Mac users, is it?

This HUD style selections display reminds me the eMate 300’s command key shortcut cheat sheet. This is described in page 19 of http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Code/5100/newton/ntj3_01.pdf . This help slip is very good idea. So at first glance of the selection display HUD, I though this was good. Basically this is good idea.

What makes me feed different is the strategy to display the HUD, and the sacrifice of our experience of visual feedback. So my idea is this.

1. When keyboard shortcut was typed, effective immediately.
2. Activate HUD by holding command (or command + option) for a while.
3. After HUD displayed, current way is OK, because there’s visual feedback there.

I hope my opinion won’t be ignored. There are many Japanese Mac users usually very silent, but we are not so gentle if there is a problem of Japanese text input :)
